One of the paintings i made for Halloween. When it comes to paint, I'm trying to get away from doing realistic paintings so i can start learning how to paint things on my own, using only what comes to mind instead of always using a reference.

I first started out with this. It's based on a book i read when i was little called Jenny Reen and the Jack Muh Lantern. It's about a lil girl, Jenny, that goes off into the woods on Halloween to run an errand for her sister, but she's warned to stay on the path cuz a creature called the Jack Muh Lantern will be wondering the woods, looking for any lost souls with its lantern. However, Jenny wonders off when she sees some flowers and gets lost, and sure enough she runs into "Jack". It's ends on a good note, but the Jack Muh Lantern gave me nightmares, and its image stayed with me all these years, even after i had forgotten the title of the book >.>

Because i didn't remember much of what the characters looked like, i tried painting what i remembered and this is what came out. By the time i actually read the book again (my sister found it on Amazon and ordered it), i was suprised on how close i was to getting "Jack" right. Blue robe, orange, pointed teeth. I even got the hair right, and of course there's the lantern it always carries around :) Only differences is that the head is a different shape n "Jack" isn't suppose to be so tall. Jenny came out WAY different than she does in the book, though :I I only got the red jacket and pig tails right, but in the book they're in a different style.

Let me know what you guys think and Happy Halloween everyone :D

The tag word I received was "Dark," and I think this picture represents it very well not just because the colors used are dark, but also because it has a great sense of mystery and fright. It represents our fears of the unknown when we think of darkness--what terrors could be lurking in there, waiting to strike? You did a good job on the lighting; I like how the lantern, the only source of light in the picture, illuminates the faces of the two characters: Jack's big toothy grin and the little girl's scared expression as she looks up at him. I also like her wide eyes; they're very expressive. You even made them shiny with tears of fright, which is another cool little detail. That's really neat how you did all of this from memory. I haven't read the book this picture is based on, but after seeing this I will definitely check it out. :)

Your tag word is "pure."

Oh my word he is creepy. The composition on this is fantastic, with him looming over her - it gives a very nice impression of the relative sizes, and the contrasting colors you've used for him really help him to stand out. Critique-wise, (since you've submitted to a critique group) the only thing I'd point out is his relative proportions. The top part of the hanging arm is much longer than the top part of the lantern-holding arm, and it doesn't look like perspective is causing that. But I did have to look pretty hard to spot that, so it's not that big of a deal. Nice work, in any case!

This is so good! It looks fantastic. Great job with all the details, I absolutely love how you've got it set in a dark area with just the one light. You pulled off the darkness really well! I really like this
